Research Opportunities Even more so than with volunteering opportunities, your school is the first place to check for research opportunities. Most schools have an office specifically for placing students with ongoing research projects and their researchers. The protocol for going about getting started on your research will vary from school to school. Research faculty publications on your own and familiarize yourself with what they work they have been doing and how they credit students in their publications. Once you have a mentor in mind, in most medical school environments it is fine to contact them, either by email or phone, to discuss potential projects and define your role in the research. Keep in mind that not every researcher makes a good mentor. It may be tempting to work with a famous researcher that publishes frequently, but their impressive research publication list does not necessarily mean they are a good mentor. If you have choices, try to find a mentor with good communication skills, who enjoys working with students and who is open to letting you be a part of the publication of the results of the study in which you participate. Many institutions conduct research in cycles e. Keep in mind, however, that your mentor may be hoping you will work on this project for longer than just the summer, so it is the most professional thing to do to be honest with your mentor and with yourself about how much time you wish to commit to the project.

Last week, I was on a panel of fourth year medical students that answered questions for the incoming third year class. They were just starting their rotations and I remember how intimidating it was.
Hey baby, wanna clap erasers together later? The illicit, forbidden, and most often scandalous nature of these relationships can be mined for angst, and generally doesn’t cause real life issues because the actors themselves are generally all above the age of consent thanks to Dawson Casting. Even if it was not illegal, the scandal that would erupt from this socially unacceptable affair would be so devastating it would basically cost a teacher or professor his or her job forever.
There are usually different levels of moral endorsement of the relationship, depending on the genders of the participants. Relationships between male teachers and male students are condemned the most harshly. When a male teacher and a female student are together it results in the teacher being viewed as a pervert and sometimes the student being slut shamed. When it’s the other way around, a female teacher with a male or even a female student is taken far less seriously.
An even more outrageous double standard is that emphasis is often placed on how attractive said female teacher is — the more attractive said teacher, the more acceptable the relationship is.

Terminology[ edit ] A resident physician is more commonly referred to as a resident, senior house officer in Commonwealth countries , or alternatively as a senior resident medical officer or house officer. Residents are, collectively, the house staff of a hospital. This term comes from the fact that resident physicians traditionally spend the majority of their training “in house,” i. Duration of residencies can range from three years to seven years, depending upon the program and specialty.
A year in residency begins between late June and early July depending on the individual program, and ends one calendar year later. In the United States, the first year of residency is known as an internship with those physicians being termed “interns. Senior residents are residents in their final year of residency, although this can vary. Some residency programs refer to residents in their final year as chief residents typically in surgical branches.
Alternatively, a chief resident may describe a resident who has been selected to extend his or her residency by one year and organize the activities and training of the other residents typically in internal medicine and pediatrics. If a physician finishes a residency and decides to further his or her education in a fellowship, he or she is referred to as a “fellow.
